Some insurance policies have infertility insurance as part of their package. If your does not, you should really consider obtaining infertility insurance before you decide to have children. It may be difficult to get the insurance once you find out that you are not able to conceive on your own, since a lot of insurance policies do not cover pre- existing conditions or problems. In addition, you may have to wait at least a year before you can use the infertility coverage in the policy.

Infertility treatments are not cheap. Fertility drugs alone can cost thousands of dollars, this doesn’t include the more advanced treatments such as in vitro fertilization, artificial insemination and embryo transplants; these can raise the costs drastically, into the thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars.

Some states make it mandatory for insurance companies to include infertility insurance as part of their routine package. However, this is not always the case. You may want to do some research into your own policy prior to the starting to try to have a baby. This way you know in advance if you need to purchase additional insurance on the side. Some doctors require a co-pay that is due by the patient that the insurance won’t cover. But this is fairly standard today. If your insurance policy has a doctor co-pay for specialists of $50, you can expect that to apply to your visits to your fertility doctor.

Outside insurance is available to cover infertility treatments. There are many different ones to choose from. You can obtain standard insurance through an insurance company and financial institutions have financing programs that are affordable. Most infertility insurances are paid like regular insurance policies, monthly. They pay what is agreed upon and you pay the remainder, a deductible or co-pay. There are usually maximum limits that are put in place. A refund program requires that you pay the entire cost for the treatment upfront. They do have a policy where, if you don’t become pregnant then a huge part of the bill is refunded, if not all of it.

Lastly, you may be able to go through a lending facility to borrow the money; this type of a program does not make you pay unless you have success and become pregnant. Otherwise, you may not be responsible for the full loan repayment.

There are limits as to what infertility insurance companies will pay out, make sure that you stay on top of the insurance companies and know and understand what they are telling you. Some diagnostic tests may not be fully covered, making them your responsibility.
